Bruins fall to Flyers, 3-2, in shootout
Jeremy Swayman atoned for particular shaky moments in the second period with particular big stops in the third period and overtime that included a Philadelphia Flyers power play but he couldn t quite finish the job in the shootout Bobby Brink scored the lone goal in the skills competition to lift the Flyers to a - achievement in preseason action at TD Garden on Monday Swayman got better as the tournament went on while David Pastrnak who missed the first scant days of training camp with knee tendinitis looked a lot like his old self in the loss The B s got goals from Sean Kuraly and Morgan Geekie The first period was scoreless and uneventful with the B s outshooting the Flyers - thanks in part to the lone power play of the period The best scoring chance came on a wraparound attempt by Pastrnak playing in his first preseason challenge but old friend Daniel Vladar made a nice pad stop Just when it looked like the B s more NHL-heavy lineup was about to assert itself in the second period Vladar was forced to make a couple of good stops on a Bruin PP and Elias Lindholm missed the net on a great one-time chance off a Pastrnak pass a puck-handling miscue led to the Flyers taking the first lead of the championship Swayman playing his first championship of the preseason coughed up the puck behind the net to Bobby Brink who got it to Tyson Foerster Foerster came out from behind the cage and fed an open Noah Cates in the slot Cates quick shot beat Swayman for the - Philly lead at But after the B s killed off a Pastrnak penalty the B s tied it up at After Pastrnak got out of the box the B s went on the attack Along the right boards Tanner Jeannot dropped it for Pastrnak who then made a terrific pass into the slot for Sean Kuraly Kuraly redirected it over Vladar s shoulder to make it - The B s could not take the tie battle into the second intermission however With seconds left in the period Rodrigo Abols beat Swayman on a long-distance off-wing shot one that the goalie needed to stop Swayman shrugged off the softy and several key stops early in the third period when the B s took back-to-back penalties Then later in the period his save on a partial breakaway by Alexis Gendron spurred a B s counterattack and a -on- Elias Lindholm fed Morgan Geekie whose wrister broke through Vladar and trickled behind the netminder for the equalizer In OT Swayman made specific big saves especially after Geekie took a penalty to get it to the shootout But Brink was the only goalscorer Beecher battling At the morning skate coach Marco Sturm gave kudos to John Beecher The first-round pick is still in a battle to make the roster but he helped himself with a good bounce-back competition on Saturday in Philadelphia after he struggled in his first encounter in New York Not only did he pounce on a Philly miscue to count a goal but he played a good grinding bottom-six meeting He had practiced the first three or four days and he had been good but Challenge One was not his best possibly noted Sturm after the morning practice But I had a good chat with him and a good video session He translated it into Match Two and was much better not just because he scored a goal but also he just did the things I desired him to do playing in that role and also killing penalties Sturm was also happy with how goalie Michael DiPietro played in nailing down the conquest in Philadelphia on Saturday after not playing very well in the preseason opener against Washington It is fundamental that we have three goalies declared Sturm Michael is another guy I don t know if he struggled but it didn t go the way he requested in Championship One He definitely felt really good last battle and he gave us that feeling as well on the bench He responded very well DiPietro requires waivers to be sent to Providence and there is no guarantee he would make it through
