McCormack, Sokolowski power Medfield to sizable victory over Hopkinton

MEDFIELD What looked like a barnburner turned into a one-sided affair for a strong Medfield squad Friday night Thanks to a strong running championship a timely passing attack and a swarming band defense the Warriors pulled away from nonleague opponent Hopkinton - at home I was really impressed with our defensive effort disclosed Medfield coach Erik Ormberg Hopkinton was coming off a huge win Patrice Petit Frere was coming off a huge yardage total so we needed to contain him We were concerned about making sure Alex Piccioli wasn t going to run wild as well Very very happy where we are after three weeks into the season Medfield - started with the ball and ran it six times for yards capped by a nine-yard keeper for junior Owen Sokolowski to go up - with to go in the first Hopkinton - responded with a nine-play drive that saw senior Alex Piccioli go -of- passing with a four-yard strike to senior Trevor Blinn to even the number - with left in the first After that senior captain Brady McCormack took over as he scampered for a -yard rushing figure and then added a -yard touchdown reception a couple drives later as he setup the Warriors with great field position with about a -yard punt return with the Hillers backed up into their own endzone to make it - It s a great example of complementary football Ormberg mentioned about capitalizing on the short field The defense came up big and we were set up on their side of the field McCormack added a three-yard rushing number in the third to push the advantage out to - as he finished with total yards with coming on carries over the first three quarters Our line is very key to our run McCormack revealed about the commanding presence of the Medfield offensive line We run the ball heavy and with the other two backs we all block for each other Medfield s Jack Gage celebrates his touchdown catch against Hopkinton during a - home triumph Photo By Matt Stone Boston Herald Medfield added a -yard passing touchdown from Sokolowski to senior captain Jack Gage after forcing Hopkinton to turn it over on downs on their next drive to push the advantage to - at the half We have a quarterback who is very committed to the run part of this and in other years and other seasons you might not get that type of a selfless approach Ormberg revealed about Sokolowski He is very very selfless It matters to him that he is part of this running pride formation The defense kept up the pace in the second half with two of the three turnover on downs coming in the final two quarters and their lone blemish came on a -yard strike from Piccioli to senior Ryan Lang with just over seconds to play in the fourth We definitely emphasize that McCormack reported about the crew mentality on defense Numerous of our defensive drills are just flying to the ball Trying to keep up We re trying to get all heads to the ball The Warriors will play at Nipmuc next Saturday at p m while the Hillers will head home to face St John s of Shrewsbury on Friday at p m
